Basics of Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Building information modeling is the innovative new approach that will revolutionize the way professionals work on architectural, engineering and construction projects.

What is BIM?Building Information Model

BIM is a model-based process that enables professionals in the AEC industries to achieve greater productivity and accuracy in their building projects. BIM is not simply a 3D model of a structure; used correctly, it can provide essential information throughout the building life-cycle, from design phase to facility management phase.

BIM uniquely integrates design and documentation for all project stakeholders – from architects, engineers, contractors, project managers and building owners. From a model, 2D CAD drawings or quantity schedules can be extracted in a single click.

Collaboration and adjustments are made easy with BIM. Multiple participants in a project can update the model and information is ready-made at your fingertips.

Implementing BIM may appear challenging at first, but given the resources and support, every organization can reap the rewards. Acecadcan ease your organization’s transition into BIM management.

BIM Modelling

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition. We can create the BIM model and design object library for you whether you are working on buildings or infrastructure projects such as roads, rails, tunnels, or plants.

BIM Coordination

It is very important to perform the BIM coordination properly in order to benefit from the BIM modelling process. During BIM coordination, a Clash Detection software (e.g. Autodesk Navisworks Manage, Bentley Navigator) is used during the coordination process to determine field conflicts by comparing 3D models of building systems. The goal of clash detection is to eliminate the major system conflicts prior to installation. This way, you can catch design errors before physical construction begins, reducing the unproductive cost of rectifying physical errors in construction.

Organisation Charts of each discipline for BIM Involved Teams

Each Organisation and Discipline will be required to submit their BIM Organisation Chart to the BIM Lead for distribution to parties involved in the project for BIM. BIM Organisation Chart should include BIM Manager, BIM Coordinators, and BIM Modellers with their names, contact, email and their discipline stated. Acecad can provide a list of names and Service Specifications of engineering professionals that can serve on your project.

BIM Requirements Kick-off Meeting

BIM Requirements Kick-off Meeting will be used start off the BIM Project and to present expectations of what is required from the various project stakeholders. This is also to showcase the objectives and requirements for the successful outcome of the project. Acecad BIM Support Specialists can assist you to scope the BIM requirements during the project kick-off meeting.

BIM Technical Meeting

Coordination Meeting is to resolve technical issues which include coordination and clash issues. Architecture Consultant, Structural and MEP Designers will prepare the issues encountered prior to the meeting and have them discussed and resolved over coordination meeting. Coordination meeting should be held at least once per week and BIM weekly minutes and BIM Progress report are required to be submitted to BIM Lead for record purpose, unless otherwise noted.

BIM Coordination Meeting with Contractor

Coordination Meeting is to resolve issues which include coordination and clash issues. Building services designers/engineer will prepare the issues encountered prior to the meeting and have them discussed and resolved over coordination meeting. Coordination meeting should be held at least once per week/daily depending on site situation and BIM minutes and BIM Progress report are required to be submitted to BIM Lead for record purpose, unless otherwise noted.

Partnership Commitment

At Acecad, we walk with you. In your implementing BIM, we can assist you every step of the way, from supporting you with trained professionals, to Corporate Training for organization-wide implementation.
